A 54-year-old St James businessman died after being accidentally shot with his own while hunting deer in Hope Bay, Portland on Sunday morning.

The deceased has been identified as David Watkins of Brandon Hill, St James.

The Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), the police’s information arm, confirmed the shooting, which has been labelled as death by misadventure.

The accidental shooting reportedly occurred at about 7am when Watkins reportedly died as a result of injuries he sustained after slipping and falling, which caused his licensed shotgun to be discharged.

“He was hit in the side and was transported to the Port Antonio Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The shooting was a death by misadventure,” a representative of CCU said.
