The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) inaugurated its Responsible Tourism Day on Thursday, May 23, coinciding with Jamaica’s Labour Day. This initiative, spearheaded by CHTA President Nicola Madden-Greig, aims to engage regional hoteliers in addressing climate change, sustainable development, and strengthening agricultural linkages to promote responsible stewardship within tourism communities. This new feature was a highlight of the Caribbean Travel Marketplace, held in Montego Bay, Jamaica, from May 20-23.

As part of the Responsible Tourism Day activities, the CHTA led a volunteer team to SOS Children’s Village in Barrett Town. Here, delegates contributed by c performing general carpentry repairs, and working on the creation of a village farming project. Additionally, they participated in a beach clean-up at Old Hospital Park and an educational tour at Montego Bay Marine Park.

“It’s important that, as tourism professionals, we give back to our communities. They are the essence of everything we do, encompassing all our people. We need to ensure that tourism touches the heart and soul of our communities,” stated Nicola Madden-Greig, President of the CHTA.

Delegates also embarked on a farm-to-table experience at Croydon in the Mountains, an eco-friendly, family-oriented organic farm located in Catadupa. The tour provided visitors with insights into the 16 varieties of pineapples grown on the farm, offering them the chance to taste various pineapples and other seasonal fruits. Additionally, the tour included a session on the farm’s honey and bee production, giving visitors a glimpse into the intriguing world of bees.

“We can’t feed our people when they come to the beautiful islands unless we have a robust agricultural sector. That’s what we hope to showcase—all the fruits and vegetables grown here, and the freshness they experience in the meals served in Jamaica,” Madden-Greig explained.

The Caribbean Travel Marketplace is the premier event for connecting suppliers of Caribbean travel products and services with global buyers. It provides a dynamic platform for networking, collaboration, and highlighting the diverse offerings of the Caribbean hospitality and tourism sector.
