Former Prime Minister PJ Patterson says present Constitution is unsuitable for 21st century Jamaica
Former Prime Minister PJ Patterson says, the present Constitution is inherently divisive, and is unsuitable for 21st century Jamaica.
Mr. Patterson made the remark while delivering the Norman Manley Distinguished Lecture in Kingston yesterday.
His lecture was entitled “Constitutional Renewal, Caribbean Integration and the Rule of Law: Carting the Region’s Next Chapter.”
He called for a constitutional model that takes into account Jamaica’s unique history, rather than the one currently adopted from the United Kingdom’s Westminster system.
Mr. Patterson sought to clarify that he is not advocating a move towards a one-party State, or the abolition of political parties.
He said he is calling for a new constitutional design, which includes a structure that provides a broader pool for the Cabinet.
