GraceKennedy Group, the title sponsors of the ISSA/Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, has announced that they will reward any school breaking a record in the 200m event at the March 19-23 event with $202,000.

The revelation came from GraceKennedy Group CEO Don Wehby during the 2024 launch of the five-day championships, popularly known as ‘Champs’, on Wednesday night. This incentive is part of the celebrations marking GraceKennedy’s 102nd anniversary.

Wehby stated, “In keeping with our efforts to refresh and innovate our Champs support with special incentives for our young athletes and in celebration of GraceKennedy’s 102nd anniversary this year, GK will offer a special award of $202,000 for any school whose student breaks the 200m record.”

He also disclosed a $178 million sponsorship for this year’s championships.

“This year, our Champs sponsorship is valued at Jamaica $100 million. Additionally, our subsidiaries Grace Foods, GraceKennedy Money Services, and First Global Bank will contribute an additional $78 million,” said Wehby regarding the championships that the company has been sponsoring since 2007. “So, in total, the GraceKennedy Group will be spending $178 million on Boys’ and Girls’ Championships. This is a significant investment for GK and represents a powerful example of our commitment to invest in schools, youth, and our country. It’s an investment, not an expense.”

ISSA president Keith Wellington expressed his anticipation for the event. “The 2024 edition promises to be another landmark staging of the greatest high school athletics championships in the world. This year’s event may well turn out to be akin to the greatest show on earth. We expect that patrons will be dazzled, not only by the performances of our athletes but also by the pulsating entertainment off the track both inside the stadium as well as through coverage from our exclusive media partner TVJ and the staging of our first off-site watch party at Murray’s in Clarendon Park.”

For the first time, ISSA will incorporate international technical officials alongside the local technical official pool, including a start referee and a member of the Jury of Appeal.

Additionally, Digicel has partnered with ISSA as the communication partner of Champs.

A total of 101 boys’ teams and 97 girls’ teams will participate in the championships, competing in  88 finals.
