A number of Haitian nationals, including children, arrived by boat at Boston Beach in Portland on Monday afternoon.
Preliminary reports indicate that a total of 37 persons were on the vessel. Their purpose on the island is not immediately clear.
Residents alerted the police to the area shortly after the individuals were spotted coming ashore.
The police, as well as health officials, are now monitoring the development.
The Haitians are to be questioned by authorities in the parish over the coming days.
