Kieron Pollard has been named the captain of MI Cape Town for the 2024 SA20 season, beginning on January 10 in South Africa

The ex-West Indies captain, who was part of the Mumbai Indians franchise in the inaugural edition, played under Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan. However, MI Cape Town revealed that Rashid Khan will be sidelined for the SA20 as he continues to recover from back surgery.

“Kieron Pollard will lead MI Cape Town in the upcoming SA20 season, while Rashid Khan is currently unavailable due to ongoing recovery from injury. MI Cape Town extends their best wishes to Rashid for a speedy recovery and hopes to see him back on the field soon,” announced MI Cape Town on Sunday.

Pollard, retained by MI Emirates for the 2024 ILT20, has relinquished the captaincy to Nicholas Pooran due to scheduling conflicts between the SA20 and ILT20.

It remains uncertain whether Pollard will join MI Emirates for the latter part of the ILT20 in the UAE.

Pollard recently played for the New York Strikers in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, securing victory in the final against the Deccan Gladiators. Meanwhile, Pooran, Pollard’s CPL team-mate at Trinbago Knight Riders, made headlines in December 2023 by rejecting his West Indies central contract to become a free agent.
