Lamara Distin cleared 1.96m to break the national outdoor high jump record.

Lamara Distin on Saturday became Jamaica’s new record holder in the women’s high jump after she won the event with a jump of 1.96 metres at the Texas Relays at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in the United States.

Competing for Texas A&M, 22-year-old Distin – who is from Hanover – not only improved the 1.93m Jamaican record by Sheree Ruff in 2010 but set a new Texas Relays record and the fifth-best mark on the collegiate all-time top list.

Distin also secured the qualification standard to the World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Eugene from July 15-24.

Distin’s previous best was 1.90m achieved last year at the NCAA Division One championship at Hayward Field. On that occasion, she finished second.

On Saturday, Distin easily beat the LSU pair of Nyagoa Bayak and Abigail O’Donoghu, who both cleared 1.82m.

Distin is also the indoor high jump record holder for Jamaica with 1.92m.
