Hydel High’s Brianna Lyston broke the Girls’ Class One 200m record to clinch the gold medal on the fifth and final day of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium on Saturday.

The 17-year-old proved a cut above the field and powered home in an impressive 22.53 seconds to shatter the previous time of 22.71 set 16 years ago by Simone Facey of Vere Technical.

Kaylia Kelly of Very Technical was second in 23.59. St Jago High’s Shenese Walker finished third in 23.89.

Lyston signalled her intention of something special in the sprint races when she clocked 22.66 seconds in the 200m at the Carifta Trials at the National Stadium and an eye-popping 11.14 seconds in the 100m at the Central Athletic Championships at G.C. Foster College.

The gold medal for Lyston came four days after she lost an epic battle with Tina Clayton in the 100m final, which was run in a negative wind of 2.8 metres per second.

Tina Clayton, the reigning World Under-20 100 metres champion prevailed in a time of 11.23 seconds. Lyston clocked 11.26.
