Nefertari looks the one to beat in Simply Magic Cup | Loop Jamaica

All eyes will be on champion trainer Anthony Nunes’ second-time-out filly, NEFERTARI, who showed amazing talent to recover from a nightmare start, almost dwelling at the gate, to beat maiden rivals at six and a half furlongs on March 12.

Returning at a mile in Sunday’s Simply Magic Cup against 11 rivals at Caymanas Park, including runners who have placed in Guineas prep races, NEFERTARI will look to stamp her class ahead of the three-year-old classics, which get under way in June.

Among the runners NEFERTARI will face is Jason DaCosta’s SILENT MISSION, who suffered double interference on leaving the gate last time out in the seven-furlong Thornbird Stakes.

With only one run under her girth, after reporting off a four-and-a-half month lay-up, outsped in second behind PRNCSSHOOTINGSTAR in the March 12 six-furlong Hot Line Stakes, SILENT MISSION placed third in the Thornbird Stakes in an ill-fated outing.

OUTBIDDER’s swerve at the start forced ATOMICA to slam SILENT MISSION, who, while recovering, almost went down when crossed by PRNCSSHOOTINGSTAR. Straightening almost last, SILENT MISSION closed against the rail to finish third, a length and a quarter behind runner-up GOLDEN WATTLE, last year’s Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes winner.

SILENT MISSION had worked 1:14.4 for six furlongs ahead of the Thornbird Stakes, alongside stablemate DEEZI, the same morning NEFERTARI posted 1:15.1, suggesting she is more than capable of matching Nunes’ runner in the event for non-winners of two races.

Whereas, NEFERTARI has been keeping quality company at exercise, her six-furlong gallop being alongside top-class stablemate FURTHER AND BEYOND, fillies pitted against colts and geldings at a mile could be tricky.

Philip Feanny’s POWER finished a decent fourth behind EMPEROR OF THE CATS in the Prince Consort Stakes whereas DaCosta’s GIANT WHEELER, full brother to last season’s classic-placed BILLY WHIZZ, could improve on his March 27 maiden win at six and a half.

Champion jockey Anthony Thomas, who rode a three-timer on Saturday, partners SILENT MISSION again whereas Linton Steadman has been retained astride NEFERTARI. POWER and GIANT WHEELER gets jockey changes, Omar Walker and Trevor Simpson, respectively, now doing duties.

The Simply Magic Cup closes the nine-race card, which runs off at 12:30 pm.
