The landlord killed on December 31 last year by his tenant in a dispute over outstanding rent was apparently before the Home Circuit Court on sex-related charges.

Thirty-six-year-old Patrick Newby — a shopkeeper and landlord of a Venables Crescent address in St Andrew — had been facing the court on a number of sex-related charges including rape.

Newby was accused of sexually assaulting a number of females. The matters were delisted in the Home Circuit Court yesterday.

According to reports on Newby’s death, at about 7:30am on Saturday, December 31, he and the tenant were engaged in an argument over outstanding rent, when the men armed themselves, with a machete and a knife.

Despite the intervention of residents, the accused stabbed Newby during the altercation.

He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The tenant was taken into custody where he remains.
