St Jago High’s Abigail Martin has set a new record in the Girls’ Class One discus throw event at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.
Completing in flight two, Martin threw 55.19m during the preliminary round on Tuesday’s opening day of the five-day track and field spectacle to send a strong warning heading into Wednesday’s final.
This is the second time the record was broken during the preliminary round, as Holmwood Technical’s Cedricka Williams had earlier set a new record of 53.22m in flight one, surpassing Fiona Richards’ previous record of 53.04m from 2017.
However, Williams’ record was short-lived as Martin soon broke it.
Williams had won the event at the Central Athletics Championships with a meet record throw of 54.01m, surpassing her previous mark of 52.91m set in the previous year, with Martin finishing second with 53.38m.
The stage is now set for an exciting final.
