The management of the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Ja.) and the UTech Students’ Union (USU) have reached an agreement regarding students’ concerns about tuition for the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year.
This follows the conclusion of two days of negotiations between the Students’ Union and the university’s management on Friday, August 16, 2024, at the institution’s Papine Campus. The teams earlier met on Wednesday, August 14 to discuss alternative proposals to the university’s previous announcement of a tuition increase for the upcoming school term.
A news release issued by Utech said:
Following initial conversations, the USU relayed the alternatives to the general student body during a virtual townhall on Thursday, August 15. During that forum, students from across all eight faculties and colleges at UTech, Ja. submitted their feedback on the matter.
“This feedback from the wider student body was presented to the university’s management on Friday, August 16 following which, the teams arrived at an amicable agreement regarding tuitions.”
In its release, UTech also stated that they along with the UTech Students’ Union have committed to pool their efforts in lobbying the government about funding.
“This is especially in light of the significant $1 billion cut in subvention to the university for this fiscal year which has severely impacted operational costs at the institution. ,” the release ended.
