40 fewer road deaths recorded this year says ITA

The Island Traffic Authority (ITA) is reporting that 40 fewer people have been killed in traffic crashes up to November 11 this year when compared to the corresponding period last year.

The ITA, in its latest bulletin, said 317 road users were killed up to November 11, a significant 11 per cent decline in fatalities when compared to 2023. The deaths resulted from 274 fatal crashes which saw a 16 per cent decline.

As has become customary, motorcyclists, at 33 per cent, accounted for the majority of the road users killed since the start of the year. Pedestrians accounted for 19 per cent of the fatalities while private motor vehicle drivers accounted for 18 per cent. Passengers of private motor vehicles  made up 12 per cent of all the fatalities recorded up to November 11 the ITA said.

Additionally, public passenger vehicle passengers accounted for four per cent, pedalcyclists accounted for four per cent, and public passenger vehicle drivers accounted for three per cent of those killed in road crashes up to November 11.

The ITA said that overall, males and females accounted  for 85 per cent and 15 per cent respectively of all road fatalities since the start of the year.

Meanwhile, St Catherine accounted for 17 per cent of the overall road users killed this year while Westmoreland accounted for 15 per cent
