The administration at Mico University College in St Andrew has temporarily suspended a ban that was recently imposed on children of staff members in the professional space at the institution, and is now working on finding a solution to the associated problems.
Two weeks ago, a bulletin was issued by President of the university, Dr Ashburn Pinnock, banning children of staff members from being in the office space at the campus. That left some staff members upset at the nearly two-century-old institution.
However, there was some major pushback from staff members, who wrote to the president expressing their concerns – that the action could be discriminatory to parents; it overlooks the fundamental challenges of parenthood; and it is misaligned with the institution’s stated values of inclusivity and support for its staff.
On Wednesday, staffers received an email informing them that the ban has been temporarily lifted, this while the administration and staff try to work on finding solutions.
It is understood that there have been several meetings at the institution since news broke about the ban on staffers’ children in the office space, in a general effort to resolve the matter.
