24 killed in 21 fatal crashes during August says ITA

Twenty-four road users were killed in 21 fatal crashes during the month of August according to the Island Traffic Authority (ITA).

This represents an eight per cent decrease in fatalities and a 19 per cent drop in fatal crashes when compared with August 2023.

During the month, pedestrians accounted for eight per cent of the road users killed; private motor vehicle drivers also accounted for eight per cent.

Of note is that there was no private motor vehicle passenger fatality during the month, however, motorcyclists, who are considered among the most vulnerable road users accounted for 63 per cent of the road users killed during August.

The ITA said males accounted for 83 per cent of the road fatalities while females accounted for 17 per cent.

The parishes of Trelawny and St Andrew each accounted for 21 per cent of the road deaths, while Hanover and Westmoreland each accounted for 13 per cent.

Overall, 272 people have been killed in 233 fatal collisions since the start of the year for an 11 per cent and 18 per cent decline respectively
