The Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) Matthew Samuda will be sworn in as the next Member of Parliament (MP) for North East St Ann, this after winning Monday’s by-election in the constituency.

Preliminary results from the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) shows Samuda receiving 95 per cent of the votes, or 4,838 votes from all 146 boxes that were counted in the constituency.

Independent candidate David 'Five Pound' Anderson could only manage 222 votes, while educator Chase Neil of the United Independents' Congress (UIC) polled just 30 votes.

Meanwhile, the EOJ said its preliminary figures suggest that a mere 11.6 per cent of the registered voters exercised their franchises in Monday's by-election.

A total of 43,827 registered voters were eligible to cast ballots in the by-election.
