Attorney Isat Buchanan has been confirmed as the People's National Party's (PNP) candidate for the East Portland constituency in the next general election, which is due by September 2025.

"With this confirmation, the PNP now has a total of 63 candidates as it prepares to contest the upcoming general election and advocate for the Jamaican people," said the Opposition party in a release on Tuesday night.

Buchanan replaces businessman Collin 'Shaka Fame' Bell, who resigned last month due to what he said was the lack of support from some PNP supporters in the constituency.

The PNP extended its appreciation to Bell for what they described as his "dedication and hard work, which has laid a strong foundation for future progress".

Buchanan is now set to face-off with incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for East Portland, Ann-Marie Vaz of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). Vaz has held the seat since 2019.

The PNP described Buchanan as a renowned and respected lawyer, who is "prepared to represent the interests of the constituents with commitment and focus".

Additionally, the opposition said the attorney has made significant contributions to community service and advocacy, establishing strong connections with the people of East Portland.

"He (Buchanan) has set his sights on initiatives such as improving education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for residents. He envisions a constituency that prioritises collaboration, growth, and empowerment for all," the PNP said.

Buchanan said he was "honoured" to represent the people of East Portland.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to meet the needs of the people. Together, we will build a brighter future, ensuring that every voice is heard and every dream is realised," Buchanan said.

"I see you; I hear you; I am you. Impossible is nothing! This is our moment for change!" he added.

Buchanan, the son of reggae veteran Big Youth, is no stranger to being in the limelight, as he successfully represented Vybz Kartel in the entertainer's appeal against his murder conviction.

In July of last year, the attorney resigned as chairman of the PNP's Human Rights Commission after making derogatory remarks about then Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn on a YouTube programme.

Buchanan has filed an appeal against the decision of the General Legal Council (GLC) to suspend him for two years from practising law, which was the penalty he was given for the comments he made about Llewellyn.

The attorney is challenging the GLC's decision on the basis that it is excessive.
