Transport Minister Daryl Vaz has referred to his attorneys, certain aspects of a media release from the Opposition People's National Party (PNP), which he said contained defamatory remarks about his United States visa.
The move by Vaz comes amid renewed public debate sparked by the governing Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) criticism of the PNP's selection of Isat Buchanan as its candidate for East Portland.
The JLP highlighted Buchanan's past cocaine convictions, and the PNP countered, emphasising rehabilitation and pointing to the JLP's own history of embracing at least one corrupt former Government minister.
The PNP also referenced Vaz's previously revoked US visa, which was reinstated in 2021.
The Opposition party also made certain comments on the visa, which Vaz described as "absolutely ridiculous!"
Vaz shared photographs of his two US visas on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday.
"For full #Transparency and #Accountability: My two US visas (DIPLOMATIC and B1/B2-10-year visas) were reinstated in September 2021 and September 2022, respectively, over 2 years ago, and cleared," Vaz wrote.
"I have noted the PNP media release attempting to once again malign and defame my character, and will refer to my lawyers.
"Once again I remind them that, 'Who God bless, no man curse'. I continue to work hard in service to my country and the people," Vaz ended his post.
The PNP’s selection of Buchanan has caused a political row between both major political parties, with bloggers from each side rehashing past allegations about their respective political opponents.
