Senior prosecutor Claudette Thompson is to continue acting in the post of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for another six months.

This was after the Public Service Commission (PSC) approved the extension, which took effect on Tuesday.

Thompson, whose substantive post is that of Senior Deputy DPP in the Office of the DPP (ODPP), was initially appointed Acting DPP on Monday, April 22, 2024.

Her appointment followed the technical departure of Paula Llewellyn under controversial circumstances after serving in the post for 16 years.

Llewellyn stepped aside after the Constitutional Court ruled on April 19, that a second extension of her tenure that was granted last year after the Constitution was amended, was, in fact, unconstitutional.

However, the Government has appealed the decision, arguing that the  constitutional amendment was lawful.

The matter was heard in the Court of Appeal in June, but the decision is yet to be delivered.

The case that saw Llewellyn's extension as DPP being struck down in the Full Court was brought by Phillip Paulwell and Peter Bunting, who are senior members of the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP).
