Dr Nigel Clarke arrives at Gordon House for his final appearance in parliament as minister of finance and public service in the Andrew Holness-led administration.
Outgoing Minister of Finance, Dr Nigel Clarke says the first 77,000 of approximately 261,000 Jamaicans, who have applied successfully to receive the $20,000 reverse income tax credit, will receive their benefit this week.
Clarke made the announcement in his final appearance as minister in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, where his colleagues paid tribute to him.
He said beneficiaries will be notified via SMS or email, the funds having already been remitted to the remittance agency or financial institution of their choice.
Clarke told his colleagues that he had taken no time off the job even as he prepares to take up a deputy managing director position at the International Monetary Fund on November 1. He declared that he was “running through the tape” as he made several announcements.
He first mentioned the reverse income tax credit during his budget presentation in March.
Clarke said it was important that only persons who have received the SMS and or email visit their remittance agency or financial institution. He informed that the remaining amounts of the income tax credit will be paid in November and December.
“If you go to a remittance agency to collect, you have to have a valid Government ID, a passport, drivers’ licence or voters’ ID. If you’re a person with a disability you can authorise someone to collect (for you) with a letter signed by a JP (Justice of the Peace). The letter must have the application reference number, TRN, the beneficiary ID and other relevant information,” Clarke said.
