West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran has reportedly been retained by Lucknow Super Giants as their first-choice retention for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Pooran, 29, is understood to have signed with Lucknow in Kolkata for INR 18 crore, which is just over US$2 million, according to reports. This marks his continued association with the franchise, which initially acquired him for ₹16 crore (US$1.9 million) ahead of the 2023 season after his release by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Pooran’s retention follows the departure of KL Rahul, who captained Lucknow for the past two seasons and was previously expected to be their top retention pick.

Pooran’s versatility and “winning mindset” reportedly played a role in the franchise’s decision, with a source close to Lucknow Super Giants describing him as “committed to Lucknow Super Giants, adaptable to the batting order, and capable in any match situation.”

The Trinidadian left-hander, who had a standout 2024 IPL season with 499 runs, including 35 fours and 36 sixes, further solidified his form by setting a new record for the most T20 runs scored in a calendar year during the recent Caribbean Premier League.

In addition to Pooran, Lucknow is expected to retain a core of key players, including spinner Ravi Bishnoi, fast bowler Mayank Yadav, batsman Ayush Badoni, and left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan.

Following their five key retentions, Lucknow is expected to enter the upcoming IPL auction with a remaining budget of INR 69 crore, having allocated INR 51 crore to secure their core players.
