Vaz On New Jutc Route For St Catherine

Commuters in a section of Bernard Lodge, St Catherine are to benefit from a new Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) route which is to be operational from Monday of this week.

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz said the new route will benefit residents of Phoenix Park Phase 2, and is the first of three such routes that are set to come on stream.

"We are planning to launch three new routes, most of them in the new Greater Portmore/Bernard Lodge area, that would be where the emphasis on houses had taken place over the last few years, where you have thousands of houses that have been built in the Bernard Lodge/Dunbeholden area," Vaz said in a video statement last week.

"We are hoping to move with the start of one route, which would go to Phoenix (Park Phase) 2 in Dunbeholden, and that would be on Monday. The other two (routes) will be announced (later)," said Vaz.

Meanwhile, he said the JUTC still plans to expand its routes to as far as Morant Bay in St Thomas, and Mandeville in Manchester.

Vaz stated that since September, approximately 300,000 more passengers have used the services of the JUTC in the Corporate Area, as well as St Catherine, and through Montego Bay Metro. He cited this as a result of the acquisition of 100 new buses in July of this year.

Vaz said much more is to be done for rural schools and rural communities when the next set of 100 buses arrives The units are expected to arrive in June or July of 2025.
