A joint operation between the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) and Jamaica Customs Agency’s (JCA) Contraband Enforcement Team resulted in the seizure of a large cache of firearms, component parts and ammunition at a Kingston wharf on Wednesday.
The shipment, which originated from the United States, involved five barrels that were declared as containing grocery and clothing items. However, upon inspection, they were found to contain a large quantity of illegal firearms and ammunition, including three fully assembled firearms and various component parts such as pistol slides, rifle barrels and magazines.
From preliminary assessment, the component parts were determined to be enough to assemble and additional 39 pistols and one rifle.
Additionally, assorted ammunition, totalling 2,819 rounds, was found among the seized items.
According to head of the FNID, Senior Superintendent of Police Samuel Blake, the seizure represents a significant blow to criminal organisations operating in Jamaica.
"This find is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, and demonstrates the effectiveness of collaboration between local law enforcement agencies in disrupting the flow of illegal firearms and ammunition into our country. It comes at a critical time, just before the Christmas season. We're committed to keeping our communities safe, and this seizure is a significant step in that direction," stated Blake.
The investigation into the seizure is ongoing, and a release said the FNID continues to work with its local and international law enforcement agencies to identify the persons responsible for the illicit shipment.
