A wave of sorrow and reflection swept through Jessie Ripoll Primary School on Tuesday morning as students, staff, and parents gathered to pay tribute to Principal O’Neil Stevens and his wife, Camesha Lindsay Stevens, who tragically lost their lives in a car crash last Friday.
The couple, who were vacationing in the US, succumbed to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident while reportedly en route to the airport to return to Jamaica.
Their sudden passing has left a void in the Jessie Ripoll community, where Stevens was celebrated as a transformative leader and Camesha was remembered for her warm support and contributions to the school family.
Tuesday marked the official return of students and staff to school following the heartbreaking news. The atmosphere on campus was somber yet united, as classmates, colleagues, and parents came together to honor the legacy of a man many described as a visionary and a mentor.
In announcing the devastating news to the school community, Vice Principal Marsha Moodie-Benbow offered heartfelt reflections on the couple’s enduring impact:
“Mr Stevens was more than an exemplary leader; he was a beacon of inspiration and dedication. His vision for excellence in education and his unwavering commitment to the holistic development of our students left an indelible mark on our school community. Alongside him, Mrs Stevens was a supportive partner and a cherished presence in our extended school family, always contributing with grace and generosity.”
The Ministry of Education, in response to the tragedy, has activated its trauma and grief counseling teams to provide immediate support to those grappling with the loss. Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon, Minister of Education, Skills, Youth, and Information, extended condolences on behalf of the ministry to the grieving family and the entire school community.
“We mourn with Jessie Ripoll Primary during this difficult time. Mr. Stevens was an exemplary educator and a guiding light for his students and staff. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected,” Dr. Morris Dixon said in a statement.
As the community mourns, plans are already underway to honour principal Stevens’ contributions and preserve his legacy. A memorial service and additional tributes are expected in the coming weeks.
He served as principal of Jessie Ripoll Primary for over a decade, earning a reputation as a trailblazer in educational innovation and student empowerment. His leadership transformed the school into a hub of academic excellence and holistic development, while his warm and approachable demeanor endeared him to all who knew him.
