In a tribute released on Saturday night, the People’s National Party (PNP) expressed deep sadness at the passing of two stalwarts of Jamaican public life, Emerson Genard Barrett and Harry Douglas.

In the release, the party said while it grieves their loss, “we reflect with immense gratitude on the meaningful lives they lived, and the profound impact they made on our nation.”

Below is the remainder of the text of the release:

“Comrade Emerson Barrett was a towering figure in public service, dedicating his life to the people of Jamaica with humility and purpose. His contributions spanned roles as Councillor, Mayor of Kingston, Member of Parliament (MP) for East Rural St Andrew, Minister of State, and Consul General to Florida.

Emerson Barrett

“He also served as Chairman of the Social Development Commission (SDC), working tirelessly to uplift communities across the island. His compassion, vision and steadfast commitment to improving the lives of others have left an enduring legacy.

“Similarly, Comrade Harry Douglas, who served as Member of Parliament for St Mary South Eastern from 1989 until his retirement in 2007, dedicated his career to improving the lives of his constituents.

“His tenure was characterised by visionary leadership and tangible achievements. Among his most notable contributions was the construction of educational institutions, such as Annotto Bay High School, Bromley All-Age School, and St Mary Technical High School, as well as the repair and upgrading of nearly 30 other schools. These efforts provided thousands of children with access to quality education, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.

“As Minister of State in the Ministry of Water and Housing, Comrade Douglas worked tirelessly to improve infrastructure and living conditions for Jamaicans, demonstrating a deep commitment to sustainable development and social progress.

“His legacy in education, community development and public service will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.

“The People’s National Party extends heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and (other) loved ones of Comrades Barrett and Douglas. As we celebrate their lives, we honour their steadfast dedication to service and their profound contributions to Jamaica.

“Their memories will forever be etched in the heart of our nation.

“May their souls rest in eternal peace.”
