Details have emerged following a fatal shooting incident involving a policeman that resulted in the death of a woman in Clarendon.

The deceased has been identified as Jimoy Suckoo, a bartender from Westmoreland.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday, January 12, at approximately 7 pm at a hotel where the woman and the policeman were staying. Gunfire was heard, prompting a call to the police. When officers arrived, they found Suckoo with a single gunshot wound to her chest.

She was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The policeman, a constable, reported that he and Suckoo had been in the room, with her sleeping on the bed. He claimed that he woke her up to go out and purchase food and that he placed his service pistol on the bed beside her.

The constable further stated that he turned his back to both the weapon and the woman. Moments later, he heard a loud explosion, and upon turning around, realized that the woman had been shot in the chest.

The policeman immediately alerted others, and Suckoo was assisted to May Pen Hospital, where she was declared dead.

However, sources at the police station have reported a differing account of events. According to this version, the policeman stated that while at the hotel, he decided to retrieve food and began to remove his service Glock pistol from his holster. In the process, he claimed the gun slipped from his hand, and in attempting to catch it, he accidentally triggered the weapon, causing it to discharge one round, which struck the woman.

The police high command and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) have since launched an inquiry into the incident.
