As the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) schoolboy football season concludes, Burger King Jamaica has renewed its commitment to nurturing young athletes through its sponsorship of the Under-14 tournament.
Speaking at the all-island junior football finals on Tuesday at Glenmuir High School, Burger King's acting assistant brand manager, Rashai Graham, expressed delight at the outcome of the season.
“This Under-14 schoolboy football tournament was a tremendous display of sportsmanship and enthusiasm from our young athletes,” Graham said. “Football, as we know, can inspire, unite, and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth for our youth. Ultimately, that is the primary motivation driving our enduring support for these footballers and all student athletes in Jamaica.”
In the Burger King all-island Under-14 final, Kingston College (KC) defeated Glenmuir High 3-0, with Javaun Buckridge netting all three goals. In the Mighty Malt all-island Under-16 final, St Andrew Technical High School overwhelmed Manning’s School 7-0.
Burger King's sponsorship included brand apparel, team and fan prizes, and a cash prize of $100,000 for the top two Under-14 teams. The company’s 'Goal Frenzy' initiative also awarded $11,000 in meal vouchers per goal scored through the quarter-finals, redeemable at its restaurants nationwide.
KC head coach Devon Smith welcomed the support, saying, “It is good that a local brand like Burger King Jamaica can support our local football league in the schools.”
Burger King also reiterated that it will continue encouraging individuals and organizations to advocate for and champion the value of school sports in community building, as well as in cultivating skills that contribute to the nation’s development.
