The St Ann Homecoming and Heritage Foundation has welcomed the presidential pardon that has been posthumously granted to Jamaican National Hero, Marcus Garvey.

The foundation’s Chairman, Lance Neita, has said the body has long advocated for the pardon, and now looks forward to a complete exoneration from his conviction in the United States.

Neita added that the foundation will also be renewing its proposals that were made in 2014 to the universities in Jamaica for the conferral of a Honourary Doctorate of Letters Degree on Jamaica’s first National Hero.

The foundation has also made a proposal to the St Ann Municipal Corporation (SAMC) for a designated space in St Ann’s Bay to be named the Marcus Garvey Square.

Launched in 2009, the foundation is a non-profit organisation of civic-minded citizens dedicated to fostering pride in the heritage, achievements and attractions of St Ann.

It reserves a place of honour for Garvey as its most outstanding parishioner, and has opened a Garvey Centre at the Parish Library that serves to educate and inform Jamaicans about the history, philosophy and other contribution of Garvey to the upliftment of coloured people across the world.

The foundation also hosts an annual Garvey Lecture at the parish library, which is co-sponsored by Discovery Bay Bauxite. The 14th Lecture is scheduled for June 6, 2025.
