Commerce Minister, Senator Aubyn Hill, is encouraging Jamaicans to stop spending time idly scrolling on social media and instead use digital platforms to start online businesses.
Speaking at the Government of Jamaica Digital Technology Showcase hosted by eGov Jamaica Limited at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel on Thursday, Hill urged people to focus on creating opportunities for themselves in the digital world.
"Get off scrolling on Instagram unless you're selling something. Many young Jamaicans are already making money selling products online. Don’t waste time on other people’s business—focus on building your own, helping your family, and growing Jamaica," Hill said.
He highlighted how digital transformation is helping Jamaica’s economy grow, and making both Government and businesses more efficient.
"This digital revolution is crucial for boosting investment, productivity and profits," he stated.
This year’s Digital Technology Showcase featured live demonstrations from Government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), along with top technology companies. Visitors saw how new digital solutions can improve public services, make Government operations smoother, and increase transparency.
The event also explored ways to improve how citizens interact with Government services using technology.
The Digital Technology Showcase encouraged discussions and partnerships among key players in the industry. It provided a platform to share ideas and shape a future where Jamaica is a leader in digital innovation.
The event also highlighted eGovJa’s ongoing efforts to modernise the public sector with technology.
Hill also stressed the importance of strengthening business ties with Guyana. He urged Jamaicans to explore the many opportunities that are now available in the rapidly growing regional country.
"Since October 2022, I have taken three business missions to Guyana. Their economy is growing fast, and they love Jamaica. Many of them studied at the University of the West Indies," said Hill.
He encouraged Jamaicans to connect with Guyana’s expanding economy, pointing out that digital tools make it easier to do business across borders.
"Go to Guyana, make your connections and start your business from Jamaica, just like many others are doing."
The event reinforced the Jamaican Government’s commitment to a "digital-first" approach, aiming to make Jamaica a leader in technology within the Caribbean.
Hill concluded by emphasising that digitalisation is the key to economic growth, better wages and increased profits for businesses and individuals.
