
Investigators assigned to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) arrested two British nationals following their attempt to smuggle cocaine through the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA), Kingston on Wednesday, March 12.
"This is the first cocaine seizure at NMIA since the start of the year, the police high command said in a release.
Reports are that at about 4:25 pm, FNID personnel were conducting security checks forpassengers boarding a British Airways flight destined for London.
During routine interviews, a British man's actions aroused the suspicion of the police and his luggage was searched which led to the discovery of 7 kilograms (15 pounds) of cocaine concealed in the lining of two suitcases he had.
During the same screening process, another British national, a woman, also aroused the suspicion of the lawmen and a thorough search of her luggage revealed approximately 7.2 kilograms (16 pounds) of cocaine in the lining of her suitcases.
The combined street value of the cocaine is approximately £454,400 (JMD $92.7 million).
Both individuals were taken into custody and are being processed.
Their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.
