Major General (Retired) Antony Anderson, former Commissioner of Police, has been named Jamaica’s Ambassador-designate to the United States of America and Permanent Representative-designate to the Organisation of American States (OAS).
Anderson is set to replace Ambassador Audrey Marks, who has been appointed as a government senator by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, welcomed Anderson’s appointment, noting his extensive leadership and security expertise.
“We are very pleased that Major General Anderson will assume this role at a time when Jamaica looks to strengthen its security partnerships. His leadership and expertise will also be critical in advancing Jamaica’s wider priorities, fostering deeper collaboration with the United States while engaging strategically within the OAS,” Johnson Smith said.
She also commended Ambassador Marks for her distinguished service.
“Anderson will build on the strong foundation laid by Ambassador Audrey Marks, whose service has been instrumental in advancing our bilateral agenda,” she added.
Anderson brings decades of experience in defense, security, and strategic leadership. He previously served as Chief of Defence Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and was Jamaica’s first National Security Advisor, playing a key role in shaping national security policy and international cooperation.
He is expected to assume his post in Washington, D.C., imminently.
Meanwhile, in announcing Marks’ appointment to the Senate, Prime Minister Holness highlighted her extensive diplomatic experience.
“Marks’ vast experience in strengthening Jamaica-US bilateral relations and advocating for Jamaica’s interests at the OAS will be invaluable in her new role in national policy and legislative development,” Holness stated.
Marks holds the distinction of being Jamaica’s first female ambassador to the US and the only individual to serve in the role three times across two administrations.
