Prison escapee held, then slapped with gun charges

Detectives assigned to the St Mary Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) charged a man who previously escaped custody with shooting with intent, possession of prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of ammunition, using a firearm to commit a felony, and assault at common law following an incident in Wood Park, Gayle, in the parish on Friday, March 7.

Charged is 22-year-old Nolando Atkinson of Boscobel Heights, St Mary.

 Reports from the Port Maria police are that at about 6:10 pm, lawmen conducted a snap raid operation in the community of Wood Park, in search of a wanted men said to be escapee from the Oracabessa Police Station.

Two men were seen on the premises one of whom pointed a firearm and opened gun fire at the police.

The team took evasive action and returned fire at the men.

During the encounter Atkinson got hit to the lower left leg which resulted in him falling to the ground.

The other man then managed to escape.

The injured man who was identified as Atkinson who had escaped custody was assisted to the hospital by the police where he was treated and later escorted back to safe custody.

 On Saturday, March, 15, Atkinson was formerly charged for the offences following a question and answer interview.

His accomplice is still on the run and is being urged to turn himself in to the police.

 A court date for Atkinson is being finalised.
