Digicel Business has firmly established itself as the leading partner for digital transformation in Jamaica, solidifying its role in driving secure, efficient, and innovative technology solutions through its partnership with Symptai Consulting Limited and Trend Media at the recently held GOJ Digital Government Technology Showcase 2025.
The event highlighted how Digicel is at the forefront of supporting Jamaica's Vision 2030 goal of making the country a global leader in digital innovation.
Digital transformation offers businesses and government agencies the ability to streamline processes, reach new markets, and enhance customer experiences. However, with these opportunities come significant risks that can jeopardise the security of businesses, individuals, and the economy at large.
Risks such as cyber threats, ransomware, phishing, QRishing [a type of phishing attack that uses QR codes], and other malicious attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Therefore, Digicel Business in partnership with Symptai Consulting, emphasizes their commitment to helping businesses address these risks head-on by providing comprehensive cybersecurity solutions that fuel organisations to become more resilient in the face of emerging threats. During the showcase, they offered free consultation sessions, security awareness training, incident preparedness and response, and dark web monitoring scans.
Also, as part of their ongoing support, the Jamaica Library Service will receive free data protection training.
Stephen Murad, CEO of Digicel, stated, “At Digicel, we are driving Jamaica’s digital evolution, establishing ourselves as a reliable partner for businesses adapting to emerging technologies. While driving innovation, we are equally focused on security, offering comprehensive solutions to protect businesses from cyber threats. By providing cutting-edge technology and ensuring resilience to digital risks, we are building a secure and sustainable digital future for Jamaica that empowers businesses, protects consumers, and fosters long-term economic growth.”
Marlon Cooper, CEO, Symptai Consulting.
Echoing this sentiment during a panel discussion, Marlon Cooper, CEO of Symptai Consulting Limited, emphasised the need for businesses and government agencies to adopt clear standards and guidelines to ensure adherence to data privacy regulations.
He highlighted real-world cases of security breaches to underscore the critical importance of safeguarding sensitive data and the potential consequences of failing to do so.
“As we continue to advance digitally, it is essential to embed key practices around data privacy and protection at the core of our transformation efforts...You [businesses and government entities] must establish a minimum standard. If you're operating in industries like banking, government, or healthcare, the way forward is to implement clear standards— not just guidance, but laws, regulations, accountability requirements, and penalties for breaches."
Cooper went on to note: "Without these measures, you risk a fragmented approach to cybersecurity, where some companies will be secure, while others are not. These standards must also extend to your partners, suppliers, and infrastructure providers who enable your cloud services and other technologies. I firmly believe that we need to move beyond principles and guidance and move towards concrete standards and requirements. You cannot be granted a license to operate unless you meet these minimum standards."
He also pointed out that 63 per cent of companies only allocate budget for cybersecurity after experiencing a breach.
Digicel Business continues to build a resilient and future-ready digital economy by fostering strategic partnerships and investing in infrastructure that will drive businesses and individuals to thrive in an ever-growing digital world.
In line with this commitment, the telecommunications giant will be hosting an event on Thursday, March 21, called the Evolve Your Data Protection Seminar, under the theme Master the JDPA and Transform Your Defenses to Protect Your Business. The event will be held at the AC Marriott Hotel, where industry experts will share invaluable insights on data protection strategies.
