Jamaicans are being called on to help sustain the tourism sector in western parishes that were hard hit by Hurricane Melissa.

The devastation resulted in the closure of some resorts and there is concern about how this will impact other businesses.

The Tourism Ministry is ramping up efforts to get visitors to Jamaica for the winter season.

St James was among the hard hit parishes, and the Chamber of Commerce has expressed concern that this Christmas will not be as festive as past holidays.

Chamber President Jason Russell said a tourism town, without tourists, means the fall out will be immense.

Mr Russell said some businesses had to lay off workers due to the financial challenges.

The Chamber President said businesses are seeking to navigate this period without the normal cash flow.

He said if local visitors, from the east, go to the west, for the holidays, this will spur economic activity.

He expressed hope that the situation will improve by next month.
