Municipal officials arrested at airport in Montego Bay with cocaine, slapped with several charges
The two municipal officials nabbed at the Sangster International Airport in St. James last Friday with over 20 pounds of cocaine have been charged.
They are 40-year-old Trevon Clayton, the Chief Financial Officer at the St. Ann Municipal Corporation, who resides in Falmouth, Trelawny and 42-year-old Latoya Hemmings, the Senior Managing Accountant at the Trelawny Municipal Corporation, who lives in Spicy Hill, Duncans, Trelawny.
Reports from the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division are that about midday, Clayton and Hemmings, who were traveling together, checked in for a flight destined for New York.
During a security screening, the two were accosted, searched and packages of cocaine were reportedly found in their luggage.
Cash in U.S. currency was also seized from Hemmings’ handbag.
Both were detained and Clayton subsequently admitted to ingesting cocaine pellets.
He was transported to hospital where he remains under police guard after expelling 82 pellets of cocaine.
Yesterday, Hemmings was formally charged with multiple counts of possession of, dealing in and attempting to export cocaine, conspiracy and possession of criminal property.
Clayton has been charged with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, multiple counts of attempting to export cocaine and conspiracy.
Additional charges are pending as Clayton remains under medical observation.
Hemmings is scheduled to appear before the St. James Parish Court on this Friday, January 23, while Clayton’s court date is being finalised.
