33 murders recorded for January- the lowest monthly tally in 25 years; gov’t welcomes continued reduction

Thirty-three (33) murders were recorded in January.

Data indicate that this is the lowest monthly tally in 25 years.

The 33 homicides represent a 55.4% reduction compared to the 74 murders recorded in January last year. 

According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force, St. Andrew South recorded the highest number of murders with 5, followed by St. Elizabeth, St. James and St. Ann with 4 each.

Westmoreland, Hanover, Kingston western and St. Catherine North recorded 2 murders each.

Trelawny, St. Mary, Portland, Manchester, Kingston Eastern, St. Andrew Central, St. Catherine South and St. Thomas, each recorded one murder.

Three divisions have not recorded a murder for 2026.

Meanwhile, the JCF is reporting that cases of rape have declined by 8.

Robberies decreased by 14 and break-ins by 21.

Meanwhile, the government has welcomed the continued reduction in murders.

State Minister, in the Office of the Prime Minister, Senator Abka Fitz-Henley said this shows a strong start for 2026.

He lauded the security forces for their hard-work.

With at least six murders at the weekend, four of which occurred in Manchester, Senator Fitz Henley said there is still a long way to go to rid the country of crime.
