Works Minister welcomes Kingston Mayor Swaby’s announcement that money from PRF will be used to rehabilitate roads
Works Minister Robert Morgan has welcomed the announcement by Kingston Mayor Andrew Swaby that money from the Parochial Revenue Fund (PRF) will be used to rehabilitate roads in the municipality.
Last week, Mayor Swaby indicated that affected roadways in all divisions will be patched or resurfaced , indicating that while more roads need patching, the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation has limited resources, including funding.
Reacting to the mayor, the Works Minister noted the complaint about resources, and pointed out that over 2 hundred million dollars has now been identified for road rehabilitation.
Mr. Morgan said that is indicative of resources being found when there is clear prioritisation.
He also stressed that in too many instances, the National Works Agency (NWA) had to intervene on roads that fall within ksamc’s responsibility, particularly where deterioration has reached a level that threatens public safety and mobility.
Mr. Morgan urged the mayor to ensure that the newly announced funding be treated not as a onetime response, but as part of a consistent approach to routine road upkeep and timely repairs, adding that this is an approach that the new one road authority will support.
The Minister also recommended greater collaboration through data sharing, including a monthly update from the KSAMC on which roads are being repaired, to strengthen coordination and accountability.
