Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness says Reverend Jessie Jackson is without doubt, one of the most positively consequential civil rights leaders of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Dr Holness in statement today says he is saddened by the passing of the American civil rights icon, ordained Baptist Minister and two time presidential candidate .
Jackson’s family said the 84-year-old died peacefully this morning surrounded by his loved ones.
In paying tribute, the prime minister states that his activism which centered on championing economic and social justice and empowering black minority and working class people including voters, had global impact and will resonate for centuries to come.
Dr Holness says humanity owes Reverend Jackson a debt of gratitude, describing him as an inspirational orator who commanded the ears and consciousness of the captains of the corridors of power, both in the United States and around the world.
The prime minister states that Reverend Jackson is among the unique cadre of civil rights leaders including the late Dr Martin Luther King Junior who was admirable for their ability to put aside self interest and at significant personal risk, elect to prioritise what was right and good for humanity not just in the US but across the globe.
He says the passing of Reverend Jackson is a significant moment in history adding that his indelible efforts assisted greatly in ensuring that kindness justice, equality and humanity prevailed in instances where they were forgotten virtues.
The prime minister has expressed condolences to his family ,friends and wellwishers, stating that he has no doubt that his lifetime of work will be remembered and honoured for many decades and centuries to come.
