Taxi operators who ply some routes in Kingston granted temporary reprieve in relation to seizure of vehicles

Taxi operators who ply some routes in Kingston have reportedly been granted a temporary reprieve in relation to the seizure of vehicles.

This was among issues agreed on  during a meeting of transport sector stakeholders yesterday.

The operators  withdrew their services on Tuesday, and called for government intervention to resolves some issues.

Among them is drivers being prosecuted for operating contrary to their licence because they plied routes designated for the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC. 

The taxi drivers want the JUTC to give them sub franchises for the routes.

President of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services Egeton Newman said the request is being considered by the relevant authorities.  

Mr Newman said taxi drivers were given the assurance that their vehicles will not be seized, while the matter is under review and until proper routes have been issued.

In the meantime, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says some agreements  will be worked out with the Transport Authority in the coming days.
