Commentator Kevin O’Brien Chang says some ideas put forward by Opposition Leader Mark Golding during budget debate are good but expresses concern about implementation

Good ideas in theory but can, or will, they actually be implemented?

That was the concern expressed by commentator Kevin O’Brien Chang in reaction to Opposition Leader Mark Golding’s budget debate presentation.

In parliament yesterday Mr. Golding outlined a raft of proposals aimed at growing the economy and raising revenue, without imposing more taxes on an already burdened populace.

Mr. Golding also chastised the governing Jamaica Labour Party for some initiatives or programmes that he says do not help the country and citizens.

The Opposition Leader also recommended that Jamaica seek financial compensation from top global polluters as climate change remains a growing issue.

Mr. Chang said that suggestion is a good one.

Mr. Chang was skeptical about the willingness of politicians to plug revenue leaks via the electronic invoice system.

Mr. Chang disagreed with Mr. Golding’s call for the continuation of the Cuban Medical Mission, pointing out that its unethical to ask Jamaica to break its own labour laws.
