St Mary Municipal Corporation partners with Department of Correctional Services for debushing of Port Maria cemetery
The St. Mary Municipal Corporation has partnered with the Department of Correctional Services to debush the Port Maria cemetery.
This follows concerns from residents and stakeholders that the cemetery has been overgrown with vegetation.
The initiative, which kick started on Tuesday, will see inmates from the Richmond Farm Adult Correctional Centre carrying out debushing exercises over the next three months.
Port Maria Mayor, Fitzroy Wilson, said he is looking forward to the partnership with the Correctional Services.
He also noted that he is hopeful that the initiative will also boost efforts to reintegrate the inmates into society.
In the meantime, Superintendent Alfred Duncan, who is in charge of security and projects at Richmond Farm Facility said six inmates from the low-security, agricultural-based facility were on hand to commence the works yesterday.
He also noted that additional inmates will be brought on board over the period.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of Mizpah Funeral Supplies, Richard Mason, commended the efforts to clean the cemetery, pointing out the final resting place of the deceased should be respected.
