Custos of St. Mary, Errol Johnson, is urging educators to move beyond the teaching of historical facts to inspiring critical consciousness.
Addressing a recent ceremony to commemorate Chief Takyi Day, he said the education system should equip students to not only recall Takyi’s liberation efforts, but to identify elements in society’s modern-day environment that demand meaningful action.
Mr. Johnson said the memory of Takyi is more significant than just the call to make him a national hero.
He explained that the chief’s efforts must inspire significant societal changes, including protecting children from predators, stopping human trafficking, and working towards true equality.
