Caribbean states are being urged to take a more pro-active and coordinated approach to strengthening submarine cable resilience to safeguard the region’s digital future.

Telecommunications and Energy Minister, Daryl Vaz made the call at the 31st Forum of the Caribbean Network Operators Group (CaribNOG) this morning.

The three-day forum, which commenced today is being held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, under the theme “The Resilient Archipelago: Strengthening the Caribbean’s Digital Core.”

Addressing regional stakeholders, Mr. Vaz noted that submarine cables carry over 98% of global data and protecting them is crucial.

For the Caribbean, there is a need for stronger regulatory alignment, improved coordination in cable deployment, increased investment in route diversity and enhanced protection of the infrastructure.

Mr. Vaz pointed to clear practical actions which the region must adopt to ensure a resilient archipelago.
