Education Ministry orders investigation after video shows students assaulting peer

The Education Ministry says it has directed an immediate investigation, following the emergence of a video showing students in school uniform physically assaulting another.

It appears the students involved were from a prominent high school in the Corporate Area.

In a statement this morning, the ministry condemned the violent action and reaffirmed its zero-tolerance position on bullying and violence in all educational institutions across Jamaica.

It said student safety remains the ministry’s paramount concern and swift action is being taken to address this serious incident.

In the meantime, government spokesman Senator Abka Fitz Henley says the ministry is deploying specialized teams to the school involved to meet with administration and students as part of the ongoing investigation.

He says the ministry is working diligently with the leadership of the school to identify all parties involved to ensure appropriate disciplinary and corrective measures are implemented.

He adds that Senator Marlon Morgan, along with Director for Safety and Security in Schools, Richard Troupe and regional team members, will also be visiting the affected school to aid in the conduct of the matter and provide therapeutic support as needed.
