Balcombe Drive Primary School administrators awaiting go-ahead to clear rubble from incident scene; this may affect school reopening next Monday

Administrators at the Balcombe Drive Primary School in St. Andrew are awaiting the go-ahead from the authorities to clear yesterday’s incident scene.

They are still deliberating if classes will resume at the start of the new academic year next Monday.

Yesterday, a section of a concrete structure collapsed on two workmen, killing one and injuring the other.

The police and fire brigade are continuing investigations into the incident, so they have not yet given the go-ahead to clear the rubble to allow for the necessary repair work.

Principal Yvette Foster told IRIE FM News that administrators are meeting and putting measures in place, as they possibly may not be able to reopen school on Monday.

If not, it’s hoped that classes can begin by the latest next Wednesday.

Ms. Foster said the guidance unit conducted a session with the staff today, as they were left traumatised by the incident.

They also held talks with the education officer, regional director and building officer.

Opposition Spokesman on Education Damion Crawford also visited the school today and offered his support.
