The People’s National Party (PNP) has moved to join Councillor Sean Barnswell as a party to ongoing legal proceedings concerning the leadership of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation.

In a statement, the PNP confirmed that an application was filed in the Supreme Court on October 21, seeking to have Barnswell joined to the proceedings brought by Mayor of May Pen Joel Williams and his Deputy Clive Mundle.

The lawsuit was initiated by Williams and Mundle in an effort to prevent their removal from office by the majority of councillors, following a shift in the composition of the Corporation.

The PNP maintains that the change has given the party a 12–10 majority.

According to the PNP, neither Williams nor Mundle included any of the Party’s councillors as parties to the proceedings.

The legal dispute escalated on October 16, when an ex parte interim injunction prevented a specially convened meeting of the Corporation from proceeding.

The meeting was called to elect a mayor and deputy mayor supported by the majority of councillors.

The PNP maintains that the leadership of the Corporation should reflect the position of the majority of its elected councillors. The party argues that the dispute must be resolved in a manner that respects the majority’s position.

The application to have Barnswell joined to the proceedings marks the Party’s latest move in seeking a legal avenue to challenge the circumstances surrounding the Corporation’s leadership and the injunction that halted the planned meeting.

The party said it remains committed to pursuing the appropriate legal remedies to ensure that the will of the majority is respected and that the leadership of the Corporation reflects its elected composition.
