Agricultural Ministry hosting series of farmers’ markets to address crop surplus

With many farmers experiencing an increase in crop production, the Agriculture Ministry has sought to address the surplus by hosting a series of farmers’ markets.

Crops such as sweet potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, bok choy, pumpkin, cauliflower, zucchini and string beans are now showing excessive growth in their production levels.

Portfolio Minister Floyd Green told IRIE FM News that the farmers’ markets, which are being held across the country, will help to reduce the surplus and the possibility of spoilage.

The initiative is being implemented with the support of the Jamaica Agricultural Society and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA).

Mr. Green noted that the farmers’ market series commenced on January 23.

He said one was held today and others will continue in parishes, including St. Ann and Clarendon, over the next few weeks.
