Detectives from the Port Maria Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) have arrested and charged a 36-year-old architect after a firearm was found concealed in a bag at the base of a pineapple tree in his yard.

The accused, Heldon Barriffe of Richmond, St Mary, was charged with Shooting with Intent, Assault at Common Law, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, Unauthorised Possession of Ammunition, and Using a Firearm to Commit a Felony.

Reports from the Port Maria Police indicate that on Wednesday, January 8, around 10:50 pm, Barriffe was at a bar in Zion Hill Crossroads, St Mary, when he got into an argument with another customer. He allegedly left the premises and later returned with a firearm, discharging two rounds in the direction of the man, who managed to escape unhurt and reported the incident to the police.

Barriffe subsequently turned himself in to the police. During a search of his residence, law enforcement officers discovered a Taurus G2C pistol and a magazine containing two 9mm rounds hidden near a pineapple tree.

He was charged following the search, and his court date is being finalised.
