Desert of Malibu and Atomica secure spots in rich Mouttet Mile

Gary Subratie's DESERT OF MALIBU  and ATOMICA secured spots in the US$250,000 Mouttet Mile on December 7 at Caymanas Park with decisive victories in Saturday’s win-and-you’re-in events.

DESERT OF MALIBU claimed the Port Royal Sprint, while ATOMICA triumphed in the Jamaica Cup. 

Six gates have been reserved for horses not domicile in Jamaica. 

DESERT OF MALIBU and ATOMICA join Jamaica Derby winner INTESTNTIMESAHEAD and Gold Cup champion FUNCAANDUN as local-based runners facing an expected full take-up of overseas-based entrants seeking easier pickings than the North American circuit

ATOMICA notched a third consecutive win in the third running of the nine and a half-furlong race after back-to-back losses to imported FUNCAANDUN

Travelling fast on the wet surface, ATOMICA dismissed NEO STAR three furlongs out. Jamaica Derby runner-up RUN JULIE RUN went in chase of a cruising ATOMICA, who responded strongly to win by three-quarter length in 2:00.1.

Meanwhile, DESERT OF MALIBU’s eagerly awaited match-up with fellow American PACK PLAYS, who made his local debut by blazing 1:17.3 for six and a half furlongs, lost it at the start when Panamanian Dick Cardenas lost his right stirrup, forcing him to ride rodeo-style throughout to finish fourth.

DESERT OF MALIBU accelerated off the hone turn to win by four and a quarter lengths in 1:12.3, notching a fourth consecutive victory.
