DPP says justice was served in Silvera case; notes need for public education on Jamaica’s laws

Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP Claudette Thompson has pointed to the need for more public education about Jamaica’s laws and how they are applied.

She was responding to questions from reporters yesterday, after former politician Jolyan Silvera was sentenced for the death of his wife, Melissa.

Silvera was sentenced to just over 20 years imprisonment.

There was some public concern that the matter did not go to trial.

DPP Thompson defended the decisions of her office, in how the case was handled.

She said justice was served.

She said prosecutors took into consideration that, if the case had gone to trial, the Silvera children would have been called on as witnesses to recount the tragic incident.
